Modernizing an older application without rewriting it from scratch
Angular is the framework a large share of business web applications are built on. Versions age; the application does not have to. I move older ones to the current version while the business keeps running.
What it means
An application written a few years ago does not break all at once. Every change just takes a little longer, bugs start appearing in places nobody touched, and eventually the team works around the application rather than changing it.
Rewriting from scratch sounds like a clean cut. In practice it means months with nothing new shipped, and a real risk of losing the rules that were never written down anywhere and exist only inside the old code.
I work the other way round. AI-assisted tooling lets me get my bearings in an unfamiliar codebase quickly and apply the repetitive, mechanical changes across the whole application at once — that is the part which takes the longest by hand and is easiest to get wrong. Deciding what should change, and how, stays with me.
It makes sense when
- the application runs on an older Angular version and the upgrade keeps being postponed
- every new feature takes longer than it should
- the team avoids areas of the code nobody fully understands any more
- a rewrite would mean months without new functionality
What you get
- an upgrade to modern Angular — Signals, standalone components
- tooling for the repetitive changes, reusable on the next upgrade
- a documented migration path your own team can follow
- working software and an uninterrupted business throughout
How it works
- Map the state
What the application rests on, which parts change most often, and where the trouble actually originates.
- Choose the order
The migration is split into pieces that can ship on their own, so the benefit shows up while the work is still running.
- Automate what can be automated
Tooling applies the repetitive edits across the codebase; the manual work is reserved for places that need a judgement call.
- Hand the team the new version
The new patterns are written down, so the team keeps building on them once the engagement ends.
